The Weight of it All

Indi doesn't think I need a towel to work out on

Weight is a touchy subject, especially for somebody of my size. I have a BMI of 40+, which is well into the obese category. I need to lose half my body weight to get into the 'normal' BMI range and that is going to be a lot of work.

I signed up to the gym last year, and I see a personal trainer once a week. My eating is still crap and I still don't really do much cardio so I haven't seen any progress in weight loss but mentally I am doing amazing. Instead of looking at something heavy thinking "nope, I can't do that", I give it a go. My trainer and I set some goals for the next month or so:
- I am going to start the C25K program, so between that and interval training at the gym I am hoping to be able to run/jog 5k.
- We set my 1 rep max for bench press, so the highest weight I can only achieve 1 rep of is 35kg (77lb) and then my goal is to work up my strength so in 4 - 6 weeks I can bench press 35kg more than once and set a new 1 rep max.
- Clean Eating!! This is the biggest one for me, after cardio (I hate cardio), and it will be helped by a nutritional eating class being helped at my gym on the 18th of this month. After that class, my trainer says I have to be 100% clean eating. By clean eating, I just mean healthy, cutting out junk food and avoiding as many processed foods as I can.

I am going to start tracking food again using MyFitnessPal, and will go back to using fitocracy to track work outs. I am also going to make myself a fitness planner, and stick to it. To achieve my bench press goal, I need to do weight training 3 times a week, and I then need to focus on cardio a 2-3 days a week too, I am going to be a busy girl! As long this damn heat waves end, but I am going to count going to the beach as cardio, swimming with some jogs up and down the beach is a pretty good work out!

Wish me luck!

  1. Good luck with everything! MyFitnessPal is probably one of my favorite apps! I also like LoseIt (which is basically the same thing)

  2. Good luck! I feel you on the cardio and clean eating but. I've somehow made it over the cardio hump (I still don't "like" it, but I like that I do it, if that makes sense) but I still struggle with clean eating. You're definitely not alone!

    1. I am doing the Zombie 5k, which is similar to Couch 2 5k but it training you to outrun zombies which makes it fun.

  3. Best of luck! I was the same way with cardio until this summer, when I really got into running. (I've been meaning to write about it for ages, but blahhh so busy.) I guess my biggest piece of advice of getting to love running is finding something to run to - I'm a music nerd so I loved buying a new album every week or so and running to it. I know friends that listen to audiobooks, sports podcasts, even their favorite movies - all of it helps!

    1. That't a great idea, I usually make playlists that are 15 minutes long so when the playlist has finished, I know to turn around to head back home and start a new playlist.

  4. Aww I'm SO proud of you. I don't even know you and I am proud of you. I too am struggling with my weight. It's awesome that some feel really comfortable at their size, but I don't. It's not for anyone else. I have a great husband who thinks I'm lovely, but for me, I would be more comfortable. I've been using the Wii which makes the cardio 10x more fun, but I return home to England in March, with no Wii (need to get one). Good luck to you and can't wait to see more of your journey. x Tamara Red Coat Studio

    1. Aww thank you, not actually knowing each other makes this very sweet. I agree, my partner always says I look good but I'm just not happy and I want to be happy with how I look.
